The History of Honey in Japan
In ancient Japan, sweetness was rare. Sugar was unknown to ordinary people for most of Japanese history, and sweet foods were often connected with medicine, ritual, or the world of the elite. In that older world, honey was not an everyday ingredient. It was something found in nature, hidden inside trees, mountains, and the quiet work of wild bees.
The earliest written traces of bees in Japan appear in the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan’s oldest historical chronicles. In the seventh century, there is a record of bees and an early attempt to keep them near Mount Miwa in Nara, one of the ancient spiritual places of Japan. The attempt did not succeed, but it shows that people in early Japan already understood that honeybees carried something valuable.
For centuries, honey remained rare. It was not a mass-produced sweetener. It was a natural treasure collected in small amounts, often from native Japanese honeybees living in forests and mountain areas. These bees moved through wild flowers, trees, valleys, and village landscapes, gathering the taste of each season into their hives.
In old Japan, honey was valued not only for sweetness, but also for its special place in daily life and traditional knowledge. It appeared in records as a valuable product, and was sometimes connected with medicine, fragrance, offerings, and refined culture. Before modern sugar became widely available, honey carried a meaning far beyond taste. It was one of the few natural sources of sweetness in the country.
During the Edo period, beekeeping became more established in rural and mountain regions. People learned to live with the rhythm of bees, flowers, forests, and weather. Honey was still limited, because native Japanese honeybees produce only small amounts compared with modern Western honeybees. Each harvest depended on the condition of the forest, the strength of the colony, and the short life of seasonal flowers.
In the Meiji period, Western honeybees and modern beekeeping methods were introduced, making honey production more efficient. This changed Japanese beekeeping, but it did not erase the older relationship between honey, mountains, flowers, and season.
Even today, Japanese honey remains rarecompared with imported honey. The country’s landscape is mountainous, the flowering seasons are short, and many beekeepers work on a small scale. Each jar of Japanese honey carries the character of its place: cherry blossoms in early spring, citrus flowers in warm orchards, chestnut trees in the countryside, wild flowers in the mountains, or forest blossoms that appear only for a brief moment each year.
Japanese honey is not only a sweet food. It is a memory of flowers, weather, bees, and people. It connects ancient chronicles, mountain villages, native bees, and the quiet beauty of Japan’s seasons.
Every jar tells a small part of that long history.
